Stop Work Orders

Contractors who receive a Stop Work Order from an inspector must immediately cease all work on the site except that which is necessary to bring the site into compliance with the regulations.

A Stop Work Order can generally be issued for the following reasons:

  • Failure to obtain the appropriate stormwater permits, applications, and authorizations
  • Failure to install erosion or sediment controls
  • Failure to implement the approved plans
  • Failure to maintain, repair, or replace BMPs when they are damaged or proven inadequate

Once a stop-work order is issued, contractors will be informed of a deadline to effectively resolve the issues that led to the SWO’s issuance in the first place. Once determined, contractors must request that the issuing inspector verify the resolution of the problem, and may effectively lift the stop-work order so that work may continue.

Our inspectors will utilize a systematic approach to evaluating BMPs to ensure that we are providing you with referenced and justified recommendations. We feel it is our job to know the requirements and be able to discern between what is being asked of you and what is actually required per the approved codes, regulations, and ordinances that govern your project.
